Johan Herman Lie Vogt

Johan Herman Lie Vogt (born October 14, 1858 in Tvedestrand , † January 3, 1932 in Trondheim ) was a Norwegian geologist, mineralogist and petrologist.

life and work

He was the son of a doctor and the maternal nephew of the mathematician Sophus Lie . Vogt studied at the Polytechnic in Dresden and graduated in 1880 as a mountain candidate . He then continued his studies of geology and metallurgy in Stockholm (among others with Waldemar Christofer Brøgger ), at the Bergakademie in Freiberg in Saxony and in Clausthal, in Leipzig and Paris. From 1886 to 1912 he was Professor of Metallurgy and Mining Science at the University of Oslo (at that time one of the youngest professors there) and then from 1912 until his retirement in 1929 Professor of Geology and Mineral Resources at the newly founded Norwegian Technical University in Trondheim . His successor there was his son Thorolf Vogt.

He was a pioneer in the geology of deposits (including in monographs on Norwegian ore deposits) and in the application of physical chemistry to the petrology of igneous rocks, especially silicate melts. He was the first to describe a number of slag minerals and used the study of slag in blast furnaces as a model for mineral crystallization in magmas. He also dealt intensively with practical applications, in particular his expertise in ore deposits, including extensive geological consulting work. He has produced over 200 scientific publications.

He received the Penrose Gold Medal from the Society of Economic Geologists in 1928 and the Wollaston Medal in 1932 . In 1897 he became a Knight of the Order of St. Olaf and he was a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and the Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab . He was an honorary doctor in Aachen (1911) and since 1912 a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . In 1915 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1926 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
