Johan Oscar Smith (born October 11, 1871 in Fredrikstad , † May 1, 1943 in Horten (Norway) ) was a Norwegian naval officer and is considered the founder of the Brunstad Christian Church , which occurs in Germany as The Christian Congregation (DCG), and its Head he was until his death in 1943.

Smith grew up in a Christian home. He later moved to Horten and joined the Navy at the age of 17 , where he achieved the degree of chief gunner (equivalent to a lieutenant ) and served here for almost 40 years. In 1898, at the age of 26, he was converted to God and came to the understanding of the Bible that is the basis of the teaching of the Brunstad Christian Church today. He later planted a church with, among others, his brother Aksel Smith , who was a dentist, and Elias Aslaksen . Aslaksen was primarily responsible for the community after the death of Johan Oscar Smith. Smith died in his home in Horten after a heart attack in the early morning hours of May 1, 1943. Despite some restrictions in Norway due to the German occupation during the Second World War, his funeral was the largest ever seen in Norwegian Horten.
