Johann (Wroclaw)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann (also: Johannes ) was the first bishop of Breslau .

According to the records of the chronicler Thietmar von Merseburg , a Johannes was the first bishop of the diocese of Breslau, founded in 1000 . Wroclaw Cathedral Island became the seat of the diocese. A church built by Duke Boleslav of Bohemia is said to have been on it. The diocesan borders were not yet clearly defined. It was the Silesian areas on both sides of the upper and middle Oder with the exception of the Glatzer Kessel , which remained with Prague both ecclesiastically and politically.

It is not known how long John was bishop. After the death of Duke Bolesław Chrobry in 1025, internal difficulties arose that threatened Christianity, which was not yet rooted, and led to a pagan popular uprising in the 1030s. It is believed that the diocese perished during this time. What is certain is that Bishop Johann had to give up his seat in Breslau. Presumably he first sought refuge in Schmograu and later at Ritschen Castle .

With the fall of the diocese, the memory of the first bishop John was also lost. It is therefore not taken into account when counting or numbering the eponymous bishops. The list of the Wroclaw bishops has only been handed down in full with Bishop Hieronymus . His successor is called John I called.
