After school education in Altenbreitungen and lessons by the stenographer Friedrich Mosengeil in Frauenbreitungen , Reum first switched to Meiningen University in 1798 , and then from 1802 to study theology in Jena . However, his real main interest was philosophy and the natural sciences. He was influenced, for example, by the philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling , who taught in Jena when Reum was studying. Reum passed the theological state examination, but then turned to the philosophical and scientific direction.

From 1805 he worked as a teacher for mathematics and botany in Heinrich Cotta's private forestry school in Zillbach . In 1808 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. at the University of Jena. When Cotta founded the Tharandt Forestry College in 1811, Reum followed him and taught at the new college from then on. In the same year he and Cotta founded the Tharandt Forest Botanical Garden as a place for practical training for the students, where he taught applied forest botany himself . During his teaching activity, Reum wrote numerous books, some of which were also translated into other languages and were highly regarded in the professional world. Friedrich August I. appointed Reum in 1816 as a royal Saxon professor. Until his death in 1839 he retained this position and teaching in Tharandt. In Dresden he was a member of the Masonic lodge Zum golden Apfel .

On the occasion of the Cottafest in Tharandt on October 30, 1863, a bust of Reums was unveiled in his honor. It can be found in the forest botanical garden together with the busts of Cotta, Johann Friedrich Judeich and Max Preßler .
