In 1734 he was appointed President of the Academy of Sciences . As such, he was a sponsor of Mikhail Wassiljewitsch Lomonossow . He has also sent an expedition to Kamchatka . Because of his knowledge of Latin, which was unusual at the Russian court, he was considered a scholar. Korff built an extensive library with 36,000 titles. He later sold it to Tsarina Katharina II , but retained the right of use until his death.

In 1740 von Korff was appointed envoy in Hamburg . The following year he went to Copenhagen in the same capacity and to Stockholm in 1746 . At the behest of Pyotr Michailowitsch Bestuschew , he supported the hat party ( Mössorna ) in the domestic disputes .
