from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Anton Weise (* 1672 in Arnstadt ; † August 22, 1750 ibid) was a German organ builder who had his workshop in Arnstadt.

life and work

Weise came from a family of musicians and was born the son of the organ builder (Johann) Moritz Weiß (1632–1704). He appeared for the first time in 1691/1692 as an employee of his father in building the organ in Gierstädt. After his father's death, he took over his workshop in Arnstadt. Wise's effectiveness as an independent organ builder has been proven between 1705 and 1738. On July 31, 1716, he and Johann Sebastian Bach took over the new organ of the Erfurt Augustinian monastery . Weise is considered to be the inventor of a coupling that coupled back from the pedal to the manual.
