For this he was provided with letters of legitimation and letters of recommendation by the government of Swedish Pomerania in Stralsund.

The trip lasted from April 15, 1724 to May 7, 1725 and brought in more than 1,800 Reichstaler. Bötticher recorded his travel experiences in two volumes . The Wolgast City School, which was largely rebuilt with funds from his collection and which he headed until his death, was inaugurated in 1727.

Johann Bötticher, who was interested in many things, devoted himself particularly to Pomeranian history. He amassed an extensive library and manuscript collection that comprised around 4,100 volumes. Bötticher wrote numerous studies, which he did not publish. After his death, the collection was bought by the University of Greifswald for 600 thalers in 1749 at the instigation of the librarian Johann Carl Dähnert .
