Karl Christian Heller , often also in the spelling Carl Heller , (* 1770 in Wiek , † 1837 in Wolgast ) was a German theologian , librarian and chronicler .

Karl Christian Heller was the son of Carl Friedrich Heller († 1788), a deacon at the parish church of St. Georg zu Wiek on Rügen . In 1773 the family moved to Barth , where their father became a deacon at the Marienkirche . He attended the city school and was tutored by his father and private tutors. After attending grammar school in Stralsund for four and a half years , he studied for three and a half years at the University of Greifswald . Since his guardian did not agree to continue his studies at the University of Jena , he accepted a position as tutor for the children of the Chamberlain von der Osten zu Dubkevitz . When he wanted to go to Jena again after nine years , a protracted illness prevented him.

Instead he went to Wolgast, where he became vice rector in 1801 and rector of the city school in 1808 as successor to Andreas Christoph Niz . Heller, who was considered a friend of Ernst Moritz Arndt , worked from 1820 as archdeacon of the evangelical parish of St. Petri in Wolgast and librarian of its church library. In 1829 he published the first comprehensive city chronicle of Wolgast , making him one of the two main chroniclers of the city of Wolgast alongside Berthold Heberlein . After almost the entire stock of books in the Wolgast church library had been sold to the library of the neighboring University of Greifswald in 1831 due to financial difficulties in the community , Heller succeeded in building up a new collection until his death, mainly through donations.
