The Protestant parish church of St. Georg zu Wiek is a three-aisled Gothic brick church that was built by the Cistercians in the first half of the 15th century .

history

The current building of the parish church in Wiek was built from 1400 in several construction phases. The first section included the choir and sacristy . The groin-vaulted nave followed later .

Around 1500 the wooden 1.75 meter high equestrian statue "Knight George on Horseback" was erected inside , which is now in a side chapel. It is dedicated to St. George , the patron saint of sailors and travelers.

The church tower was destroyed in the 16th century and the free-standing belfry was built around 1600 .

In the 18th century the church received a baroque altar , which was created by Michael Müller. The wooden baptismal stand and one of the two confessionals also date from this period. In 1787 a crypt was added to the east of the priest's gate. In 1826 the church received a pulpit, chairs and galleries.

The Wieker Church is one of the most spacious churches on Rügen. It is currently being gradually restored under the responsibility of an association.

In the churchyard there are several gravestones and a war memorial in memory of those who fell in World War I from 1923.

organ

The organ was also built in 1826 . It comes from the Stettin organ builder August Wilhelm Grüneberg (1787–1837). In 1875 Friedrich Albert Mehmel added a second manual to the instrument . The slider chests -instrument has nine register on two manuals and pedal . The actions are mechanical.
