Johann Baptist Wengler (born June 4, 1816 in St. Radegund ; † April 6, 1899 in Aigen in Salzburg ) was an Austrian painter of the Viennese Biedermeier period .

Life

Wengler studied at the Vienna Art Academy and then taught as a drawing teacher. He was a pupil and friend of the painter Johann Matthias Ranftl and with him committed to rural genre painting .

After traveling to Croatia, Russia and Slovakia, Wengler traveled to North America in 1850, where he met the Indians of the Sioux , Chippewa , Winnipeg and Menominee , and made numerous watercolors. In 1851 he involuntarily returned to Vienna because of a fever. In 1875 Wengler returned to North America, where he financed himself mainly through religious Catholic art, which met the conservative tastes of many Americans. Wengler returned to Austria in 1888.

He spent his old age with his sister in Aigen near Salzburg, where he is also buried. Most of his estate is in Upper Austria. State Museum. His great-nephew Alois Wengler (1905–1989) was a regionally important wood sculptor, from whom numerous works have been preserved, especially in the upper Innviertel.
