Johann Bernhard Bach the Elder (born May 23, 1676 in Erfurt ; † June 11, 1749 in Eisenach ) was a German composer from the Bach family and a second cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach .

Life

Johann Bernhard Bach was born (most likely in November) 1676 in Erfurt, in the house "To the three roses" on Junkersand, and was baptized on November 25, 1676 in the Erfurt merchants' church . Like his brother Johann Christoph, who was born in 1685, he was trained as a child by his father Johann Egidius Bach . After attending the Schola Mercatorum , he started school at the Erfurt Ratsgymnasium in autumn 1690 . In 1695 he became organist in Erfurt , at the Kaufmannskirche . In 1699 he moved to the St. Catherine's Church in Magdeburg . In 1703, Duke Johann Wilhelm von Sachsen-Eisenach appointed him as a harpsichordist in the court orchestra in Eisenach, where he was also hired as the successor to his uncle Johann Christoph Bach as organist at the Georgenkirche . From 1708 to 1712 Johann Bernhard Bach worked with Georg Philipp Telemann in Eisenach .

On August 6, 1716 he married Johanna Sophia Siefer. The couple had three children. In 1741 the ducal orchestra was dissolved, so that Johann Bernhard Bach thereafter (until his death) devoted himself exclusively to the office of cantor (probably with continued payment of his ducal remuneration of 100 Thalers).

Johann Bernhard had a lifelong friendship with his famous cousin Johann Sebastian . In 1715 he was godfather to Johann Sebastian's son Johann Gottfried Bernhard , while Johann Sebastian was godfather to his eldest son Johann Ernst in 1722 . After the death of Johann Bernhard, he was his successor as organist at the Georgenkirche in Eisenach.

Most of his musical output, except for four orchestral suites and some organ works, was lost. It is known that Johann Sebastian Bach and his orchestra Collegium Musicum in Leipzig performed various pieces by his cousin. The entry Bach (family) in MGG mentions the influence of Johann Pachelbel on the organ compositions of Johann Bernhard Bach. Pachelbel was the organist in Erfurt from 1678 to 1690.
