Johann Christoph Bach (baptized on December 8 . Jul / 18th December  1642 greg. In Arnstadt , † 31 March 1703 in Eisenach ), the eldest son of organist Heinrich Bach , was a German composer. He is considered the most important composer of his generation within the Bach family .

life and work

Bach was a pupil of his father and was organist in the Arnstadt Castle Chapel from 1663 and at the Georgenkirche in Eisenach from 1665 , where he also worked as a harpsichordist in the court orchestra and was promoted to chamber musician in 1700. In 1694 he was chosen as a “needy person” to be the almsman's office in Eisenach, and in the same year he moved into an official apartment in the so-called coin.

Only a few works by Johann Christoph Bach have survived, most of them in the Altbach archive :


Protrude from his work especially the Old - solo cantata "Oh that I had water enough" and 15 variations on the "Aria Eberliniana" (1690) out.

His son Johann Friedrich Bach (1682-1730) succeeded Johann Sebastian Bach in 1708 as organist at the Divi-Blasii-Kirche (Mühlhausen) .
