Johann Broling

Johann Broling (* probably in Aachen ; † April 17, 1464 in Lübeck ) was a Lübeck merchant and councilor.

Life

As a businessman, Johann Broling was a member of the Lübeck Schonenfahrer . He was elected to the Hanseatic City Council in 1447. As councilor, Broling represented the interests of the city in Hamburg in 1457 in a dispute between the cities of Stade and Stendal with various merchants and also in Wismar . In 1459 he participated in the peace negotiations between Denmark and Poland. 1461 representative of Lübeck in a dispute with the city of Kolberg . In Lübeck citizens' wills he is listed several times as a documentary witness and guardian . As early as 1460 he had become a member of the very influential patrician circle society in Lübeck . He lived in the house at Breite Straße 13 in Lübeck. The verse goes to him

"Lubeke, all steden beautiful, van riker eren draggestu de krone."

In his will, the childless Broling left several legacies:

  • The financing of the middle Holsten Gate was secured on the basis of a legacy of 4,000 Marks from Luebisch. In 1464, the council builder Hinrich Helmstede began building today's landmark, which was completed in 1478.

The liquidation of his estate was in dispute and Emperor Friedrich III. appointed the City of Hamburg as arbitrator between the executors and members of the Broling family.

Honor

In Lübeck, Brolingstrasse and Brolingplatz in the St. Lorenz-Nord district are named after him.
