from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Christian Günther (born October 10, 1769 in Jauer ; † June 18, 1833 in Breslau ) was a German pharmacist and botanist .

Life

Johann Christian Günther was the son of a court pharmacist based in Jauer. He spent his pharmaceutical apprenticeship first with his father and then in a Wroclaw office . After conditioning for two years in Dresden , he went to Berlin to receive a full scientific education under the auspices of Sigismund Friedrich Hermbstädt . He then turned to botanical studies with particular fondness . In 1797 he took over the pharmacy of an uncle who lived in Breslau and in September 1799 he became an assessor at the Medical College there, in which position he worked for many years in the examinations of pharmacists and in pharmacist auditing.

As an avid plant collector touring all of Silesia , he began to publish dry copies of the Silesian flora centuria by centuria, and almost all of the Silesian phanerogams and ferns were contained in the gradually emerging 15 centurions . This enabled him to publish an Enumeratio stirpium phanerogamarum quae in Silesia sponte proveniunt (1824). Günther's name was introduced into the botanical nomenclature by Pohl and Sprengel by characterizing a Potentilla guentheri . In addition, Günther's name was used three times to designate plant genera, including by Sprengel for a Brazilian synanthere.

On August 3, 1833 he was registered with the registration number. Elected a member of the Leopoldina in 1372 .
