Johann Christian Kühner

Johann Christian Kühner (born June 1, 1774 in Hildburghausen ; † January 23, 1852 in Gotha ) was a German painter and director of collections in Gotha.

In 1802 he traveled to Paris with Friedrich Sickler , where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts until November 1803 . After his return, Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg appointed him court painter in 1804 . From 1806 to 1812 Kühner studied in Italy, most recently in Rome . 1816 appointed him Duke August for Councilor and professor of the theory of Fine Arts. He was entrusted with the supervision of the ducal collections of paintings, engravings and hand drawings . In 1824 Duke Friedrich IV made it .as director of the painting, engraving and hand drawing collections. In 1842, Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was appointed secret councilor .

Kühner married Friederike Fladung in 1795 (died 1850). They had four children, including three daughters and the philologist Raphael Kühner . The eldest daughter Wilhelmine Christiane married the Altenburg minister Karl Christian Wüstemann in 1818, the second, Henriette, married the Gotha building manager Johann Georg Broßmann. The youngest daughter Karoline stayed with her parents and looked after them.
