Johann Christian Neuber (born April 7, 1736 in Neuwernsdorf ; † January 1, 1808 in Eibenstock ) was a German stone cutter and court jeweler in Dresden.

Life

Neuber learned the goldsmith and stone cutter trade in Dresden from his later father-in-law Heinrich Taddel . In 1762 he was accepted into the gold workers' guild in Dresden. From 1767 he worked for the court, was responsible for the Green Vault from 1769 and was appointed court jeweler in 1775.

Neuber's works are shaped by early classicism . His specialty was the production of gold and gemstone snuff boxes , which were often given as royal gifts.

As a gift of honor from the Saxon King Friedrich August to the French diplomat Baron de Breteuil , who was instrumental in bringing about the peace of Teschen , Neuber made a splendid table in 1781, which is considered his masterpiece. The table on the Peace of Teschen , which is decorated in pietre-dure technique with inlays made of 128 stones and woods from the Ore Mountains , has since been in the possession of the de Breteuil family. In 2010 he received the status of a French Trésor national (works of art of national importance).

The Russian plenipotentiary for the peace negotiations, Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Repnin , received an extensive Meissen service with centerpieces , of which only two saucers created by Neuber could be identified so far.

In 1782 he made a magnificent fireplace for the Green Vault.
