Life

Johann Christoph Pfennig was born the son of a factory owner and a pastor's daughter. He attended schools in his hometown Halle and then studied theology and philology at the University of Halle from 1745 to 1749 . After a time as a private tutor , he went to the council school in Stettin in 1750 . Here he was initially vice-principal adjunctus and in 1756 received the post of vice-principal. In 1773 he moved to the Nikolaikirche as the second pastor ("deacon") and in 1786 moved to the position of the first pastor ("pastor"). In 1796 he was also consistorial assessor in the Szczecin consistory . He died as senior pastor and consistorial councilor on August 9, 1804 at the age of 80.

As a school teacher and writer, Pfennig earned himself through several useful textbooks, through an introduction to mathematical and physical geography (Stettin 1765), through a guide to the knowledge of the mathematical description of the earth (Stettin 1779), a guide to the knowledge of physical geography (Stettin 1781 ) and several similar writings. His instructions for a useful and thorough knowledge of the latest description of the earth seem to have met with the most applause (Berlin 1770). The fifth, continuously enlarged and improved, fully indexed edition of this book was published in Berlin and Stettin in 1794. It is a material-rich compendium of geography , most of which contains information on all countries and continents in the form of tables. To this work he added a short draft of the latest geography according to its five parts for beginners in 1790 .
