Johann Dilliger (also: Dillinger ; born November 30, 1593 in Eisfeld ; † August 28, 1647 in Coburg ) was a German Protestant theologian, composer and editor.

Life

Johann Dilliger was the son of farrier Hans Dilliger and grew up in modest circumstances. First he attended the Latin school in his hometown. He then went to the grammar schools in Naumburg and from 1611 to Magdeburg , where he learned from Michael Praetorius , as can be seen from Dilliger's entry in his studbook from 1616. After earning respect as a choir singer, Dilliger became cantor in Magdeburg's old town in 1617 and also head of figural music in Magdeburg Cathedral in 1619 .

On February 27, 1618, he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , became cantor at the Wittenberg Castle Church and on September 21, 1624, he acquired the degree of master's degree . In 1625 he went to the Casimirianum Coburg as cantor , became pastor in Gellershausen in 1633 and returned to Coburg in 1634, where he became vicar at the Moritzkirche and pastor in the Kreuzkirche (St. Crucis).

In his day, Dilliger was a respected author of edification and composer. In the Thirty Years War he tried to instill new courage. Finally, he also saw that the famine and epidemics wiped out almost his entire family.
