Johann Esche around 1705

Johann Georg Esche (born May 2, 1682 in Köthensdorf near Taura , † January 30, 1752 in Limbach ) was a German stocking manufacturer .

biography

He worked as a coachman, petschier and form engraver in Limbach with Anton von Schönberg and, according to a legend, got to know the French hosiery machines on a trip to Dresden. At the beginning of the 18th century in Limbach (today Limbach-Oberfrohna) he is said to have recreated a French hand knitting chair and was actively involved in the spread of the new knitting technique . In 1719 Johann Esche established the first Saxon silk stocking manufacture in Limbach , whose products differed positively from French stockings, especially in terms of quality. In 1747 he is referred to as a "stocking, silk and wool fabricant". His descendants continued the manufacture in Limbach, which had developed into the center of the Saxon stocking industry, and in 1870 they relocated the factory to Chemnitz . Ash is considered to be the founder of the West Saxon knitted goods industry.
