Johann Evangelist Hölzl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Evangelist Hölzl (also: Johann Ev .; Johann Evangelista) (* March 1716 in Dietramszell ; † October 1, 1765 in Ingolstadt ) was a Rococo painter in Ingolstadt, Bavaria.

Life

Johann Evangelist Hölzl stands out among the Ingolstadt painters of the 18th century. His parents come from Mühltal. He was baptized on March 6, 1716, so he was born shortly before or on the same day. Before 1747 he married a Margaretha Antonia, with whom he was accepted as a citizen in Ingolstadt in 1747. The marriage had five children. In 1753 he bought a house at Lebzeltergasse 2. In 1761 he was elected to the city's foreign council. He died of an illness that he contracted during the frescoing as part of the Baroque transformation of the Moritzkirche in Ingolstadt .

Two of his brothers, Andreas and Felix , were also painters; Felix was based in Straubing and is best known for the dance of death fresco cycle of 1763 in the soul chapel of the Petersfriedhof.

Works

Hölzl's strength lies in the art of portraits ; he described himself as a "portrait painter". He also created history pictures for altars and pictures of saints, all in oil on canvas. Hölzl was also a fresco artist; hardly any of his frescos have survived. His religious images can be found in a number of churches in and around Ingolstadt. The Stadtmuseum Ingolstadt owns some of his portrait paintings, others are privately owned. In 1985 the Eichstätt Diocesan Museum showed an exhibition of 12 works by Hölzl.
