biography

Years in Ehingen

Johann Evangelist Schöttle was born on December 26, 1819 in Granheim near Ehingen an der Donau. The love for his homeland and a deep awareness of history were in this man's blood from his family, as he came from an ancient family of farmers, teachers and pastors who had lived in Granheim for centuries. His father, Bonaventura Schöttle, was a respected and wealthy teacher and farmer. Johann Evangelist was the third of a total of 13 children.

Study of theology and ordination

After attending the grammar school in Ehingen , four years followed in the Konvikt in Rottweil and another four years in the Higher Catholic Konvikt Tübingen , where he was ordained a priest in 1843.

Years on the Härtsfeld

At the age of 29, the young theologian began his work on the Härtsfeld . He was first pastor in Trugenhofen for four years and from 1852 to 1862 pastor and school inspector in Ebnat . During these 14 years he engaged in extensive and thorough studies. In addition to theological work, he mainly dealt with the history of the individual localities of the then Oberamt Neresheim , with the antiquities that still existed from Roman times, with the school facilities, with the moral history, with old customs and legends, with the war events, with the significant incidents of fire , with the life stories of important personalities, with agricultural and forestry conditions and much more. He pursued an extensive study of sources, as is evident from a "History of the Oberamtstadt Neresheim" published in 1860. His multifaceted studies were reflected in extensive notes, which he used to create detailed local chronicles with an average of 500 pages. This extraordinary man wrote the local history for all 34 communities of the then Oberamt Neresheim. Still an inestimable value for every community today, but a tremendous achievement for the author, if you consider that everything in these few years, the fair copies of the chronicles had to be recorded in punctual writing. The chronicles alone are about 17,000 pages.

The last few years in Seekirch

Pastor Schöttle left Härtsfeld in 1862 and moved to Seekirch am Federsee near his home , his last place of work, where he created a family chronicle for each individual house.

He died there at the age of 65 on October 18, 1884. His grave is still in the Seekircher cemetery today.
