Johann Fidelis Wez (born September 19, 1741 in Sigmaringen ; † April 29, 1820 there ) was a German painter.

Life and works

Johann Fidelis Wez was a son of the Sigmaringer Hirsch host Johann Georg Wez and his wife Agathe, born. Filser. He began his training as a painter at the age of 19, after having been a member of the Franciscan order for four months. He then spent several years traveling. From about the death of Andreas Meinrad von Ow in 1792, the number of orders he received increased. He furnished numerous churches in Hohenzollern and Baden with pictures. In 1891 he created a Last Supper, an Immaculate Conception and a Johannes Nepomuk for the parish church in Boll , in 1788 a crucifixion of Christ for the parish church in Thalheim ( Oberamt Sigmaringen ), in 1789 an annunciation for the north side altar of the parish church St. Jakob in Owingen and a saint Wendelin for the south side altar of the same church, in 1791 an apparition of St. Michael on Monte Gargano , a St. Francis and St. Antonius for the church in Veringendorf , a Christ on the Mount of Olives as well as a flagellation and a crowning of thorns he painted in Storzingen in 1792 . His holy Nicholas before Maria from 1797 in Dietelhofen in the Riedlingen district was painted over. The farewell of the Apostle Princes Peter and Paul before they went to the torture site in Sigmaringendorf dates from 1819 . In Hart in the Oberamt Haigerloch he left a Holy Family, a beheading of Johannes and the saints Wendelin and Fidelis. In Leibertingen he painted a crucifixion, in Veringendorf, Storzingen, Steinhilben and Langenenslingen station and apostle pictures. In the New Palace in Meersburg there are four over- portals by Wez 'hand.

The Langenenslingen images of the apostles were temporarily thought to be lost, but were found in the attic of the rectory.

According to Thieme-Becker, however , his achievements as a portraitist are more remarkable. Many portraits came into private ownership in Sigmaringen; the portrait of the pastor Schwab, however, ended up in the Sigmaringen town hall and the portraits of Laurenz and Franziska Arnaud in the Arnaud wine house in Sigmaringen. A self-portrait of Wez, the back of which bears some biographical information about Wez, belonged to Berta Mock in Sigmaringen.

Wez's motto can be found on another self-portrait: “Vita brevis, ars longa; ergo nulla dies sine linea. "The Rheinische Merkur described Wez in 1955 on the occasion of the purchase of his sketchbooks, which were brought to Sigmaringen as a result, as" an artist who grew out of Baroque tradition and was able to delve into detail, capable of an excellent observation and a clear, sure line. "Wez died after a stroke . In Sigmaringen, Wetzstrasse is a reminder of the painter.
