biography

Johann Fischer was born on October 5, 1919, the third of seven children in Eggendorf am Wagram , Lower Austria . His parents ran a small farm with viticulture . Fischer completed an apprenticeship as a baker. In 1940 he was drafted into the German Wehrmacht and became an American prisoner of war. After the end of the war and his return, he took over his parents' farm. 1957 went to Fischer for the first time in psychiatric treatment. From 1961 he became a permanent patient in what was then the “ Gugging Sanatorium ”. In 1982 he moved to the “Center for Art Psychotherapy” founded by the psychiatrist Leo Navratil , today's House of Artists , Maria Gugging. Inspired by his creative environment there, Fischer soon took up drawing materials himself and began to draw regularly. As early as 1983 he took part in an exhibition of the artists from Gugging in what was then the Museum of the 20th Century in Vienna. From 1984 onwards, the complex graphic fabrics of drawing and writing that were central to his work were created.

At the center of Johann Fischer's work are tightly interwoven compositions of drawing and writing that deal with topics such as family , agriculture , Catholicism and the political situation in Austria . The materials he used were pencil and colored pencil . On large-format sheets of paper, Fischer drew brightly colored people , animals , plants and machines , around which he grouped written explanations, the reading direction of which is given by a numbering system. The writing elements in Fischer's work have the character of an individual calligraphy , which the artist himself referred to as "inscriptions".
