Johann Friedrich Möller (General Superintendent)

Johann Friedrich Möller (born November 13, 1789 in Erfurt , † April 20, 1861 in Magdeburg ) was a German Protestant pastor, general superintendent of the old Prussian church province of Saxony and consistorial councilor in Magdeburg.

Life

Johann Friedrich Möller came from a pastor family in Erfurt. He grew up in Stotternheim , attended grammar school in Erfurt after his father Johann Melchior Möller the Elder had given him. J. had given lessons and studied theology at the University of Göttingen until 1813 . His first marriage was on September 13, 1818, Dorothea Sophie Luise (1785–1820), daughter of Adam Christian Friedrich Reinhard (1747–1808), professor of law and councilor in Erfurt. From this marriage came the daughter Auguste, who was married to Pastor Grabe. In his second marriage on April 24, 1823, he married Marie Dorothea (Doris) Trommsdorff (* April 13, 1798 - July 8, 1871), who belonged to the important Trommsdorff family of pharmacists in Erfurt (Schwanenring pharmacy, today the main post office in Erfurt ), her father was Johann Bartholomäus Trommsdorff . Möller had eight children with her. From her first marriage to Friedrich Keyser, she had two children, including the painter Fritz Keyser .

From 1829 Möller was pastor of the Barfüßerkirche in Erfurt. In 1832 he became consistorial councilor. In spring 1843 Möller succeeded Bernhard Dräsecke as general superintendent of the church province of Saxony in Magdeburg. The office was connected with the function of 1st cathedral preacher at Magdeburg Cathedral . Here he fought above all the rationalistic friends of light and was jointly responsible for the dismissal of pastors Gustav Adolf Wislicenus and Leberecht Uhlich . As a member of the Prussian General Synod in 1846, he also worked as a supporter of Neo-Lutheranism in the spirit of Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg .

Among other things, he published collections of sermons , including the two-volume draft sermons on free texts , the two-volume sermons on the last fates of our Lord, and the sermons in four volumes on freely selected sections of the Holy Scriptures .

Politically, he represented conservative views. In 1850 he was a member of the state house of the Erfurt Union Parliament .

Möller was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd class with breast star and oak leaves. A life-size oil painting Möller is kept with the descendants. His son was the theologian Ernst Wilhelm Möller , his daughter the writer Lina Walther .
