Johann Friedrich Nicolai

Johann Friedrich Nicolai (* 1639 in Querfurt ; † November 28, 1683 in Lauenburg / Elbe ) was an Evangelical Lutheran pastor and general superintendent for the Duchy of Saxony-Lauenburg , based in Lauenburg / Elbe from 1682 to 1683.

Professional background

Nicolai studied in Jena , where he later worked as a Magister legens and adjunct at the Philosophical Faculty. In 1670 he published the Hodegeticum orientale… harmonicum , a kind of comparative dictionary of the Semitic languages .

In 1670 he became a preacher at the St. Johannis Church in Lüneburg .

After the death of the general superintendent Albertus Elers , he belonged to the circle of candidates for the office, but lost to August Pfeiffer from Meissen in the election . However, when he did not take up his post because he was not dismissed from the Electoral Saxon service and received a professorship in Wittenberg , Nicolai was appointed General Superintendent of the Duchy of Saxony-Lauenburg and Pastor in Lauenburg / Elbe on January 19, 1682. In 1683 he carried out a general visit.

But after almost two years of activity, Nicolai suffered a stroke on November 28, the first Sunday in Advent 1683, during the sermon, of which he died on the same day.
