Johann Friedrich Salomon Kaltwasser (born March 22, 1752 in Gotha ; † August 17, 1813 there ) was a German classical philologist , teacher and translator .

Life

Johann Friedrich Salomon Kaltwasser was the son of the bookbinder Johann Heinrich Kaltwasser and his wife Susanne Margarethe, née Böhm. He attended high school in Gotha until 1769 and then studied theology at the University of Jena . He returned in 1775 as a collaborator at the illustrious grammar school in his hometown, where he became professor of ancient Greek in 1778 . He worked as a teacher at the school for almost 39 years until his death. He gave private lessons in Greek to the adult Duke Ernst II. Ludwig von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg .

Kaltwasser gained fame mainly through his translations by Plutarch and the continuation of Friedrich Andreas Stroth's translation work on Diodor's library . He was also known for his reviews in the Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung .
