Ute Schneider (born November 9, 1960 in Bonn ) is a German modern historian .

Ute Schneider studied modern and medieval history as well as general linguistics at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf from 1981 to 1987 . In 1993 she received her doctorate from the Technical University of Darmstadt with an examination of the political festival culture in the Rhine Province in the 19th century. From 1996 Schneider worked there as a university assistant at the chair for modern and contemporary history, and completed her habilitation in 2002 on issues of family law in the German Democratic Republic . Then she worked in Darmstadt as a university lecturer, and was substitute for various professors. Since 2007 she has been Professor of Social and Economic History at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

After the ten-year term of office of Director Claus Leggewie, Ute Schneider was appointed provisional director of the Institute for Cultural Studies in Essen from August 1, 2017, and Julika Griem is the designated president from April 2018 .
