Johann Friedrich Trentepohl (born February 17, 1748 in Oldenburg (Oldb) , † March 16, 1806 in Oldenbrok ) was a German Lutheran clergyman and botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is “ Trentep. "

Life

Trentepohl was born as the son of the scribe and later chamber assessor Wilhelm Trentepohl († 1757) and his wife Charlotte Sophia born. Brincmann was born in Oldenburg and attended the local Latin school . After studying Protestant theology from 1766 to 1769 at the University of Leipzig , Trentepohl worked as a private tutor in Dötlingen and Rodenkirchen . In Dötlingen he was employed by the local pastor Gottfried Wilhelm Roth, the father of the botanist Albrecht Wilhelm Roth . In 1777 he was also active as an early preacher in Oldenburg. In 1781 he became pastor in Eckwarden and in November 1789 moved to the pastor's office in Oldenbrok.

His work with Pastor Roth was decisive for Trentepohl's development in the field of botany, as he was able to convey his and his own son's initial interest and instructions in botany. In addition to his pastoral work, Trentepohl continued to educate himself in this area and, especially in summer, went hiking in the Oldenburger Land to explore the local flora. Inspired by Albrecht Roth, he devoted himself to researching the coastal and algae flora of his homeland.

He wrote down his research results of the Oldenburg flora in several manuscripts written in Latin , which passed into the possession of the ducal collection. He also furnished two herbaria .

family

Trentepohl was married twice, first to Helene Margarethe geb. Bendes († 1793) and later with Philippine Charlotte Johanne geb. Köhnemann († 1806). From these connections he had a total of five children, of whom the son Henning became a councilor at the Oldenburg Higher Appeal Court .
