Johann Georg Gesner
Johann Georg Gesner , also Geßner (born November 21, 1729 in Gunzenhausen , † May 1, 1779 in Lübeck ) was a German educator and librarian.
Life
Gesner was a son of Gunzenhausen's senior medical officer and later court and personal physician in Stuttgart Johann Albrecht Gesner (* 1695 in Auhausen ; † 1760 in Stuttgart). He attended high school in Ansbach and from 1748 the University of Göttingen with his uncle, the professor and university librarian Johann Matthias Gesner . After completing his studies in 1751, Gesner first worked as a private tutor with Gerlach Adolph von Münchhausen and then as a collaborator (assistant teacher) at the Ilfeld monastery school . In 1755 he was appointed sub-rector at the Katharineum in Lübeck , where he remained until the end of his life. Associated with the sub-rectorate was the management of the Lübeck city library , which received a significant increase in his tenure in 1759 with the library of pastor Heinrich Scharbau . In 1763 he was promoted to vice rector with retention of the librarianship . His successor was Ludwig Suhl in 1779 .
Gesner's lasting library achievement lies in his first directory of the cimelies and incunabula of the city library, the first part of which he presented in 1769 as a celebratory gift at the inauguration of Mayor Friedrich Green (1701–1773) and Councilor Anton Diedrich Wilken . The second part followed as a ceremony for the inauguration of Mayor Hermann Georg Bünekau and Councilor (and later Mayor) Gabriel Christian Lembke . His successor Ludwig Suhl published a revised version in 1782.
