Johann Georg Schaefer

Johann Georg Schaefer (born April 13, 1823 in Mainz , † August 15, 1908 in Darmstadt ) was a German art historian , educator and teacher .

Life

After graduating from high school, Johann Georg Schaefer, who was born in Mainz, turned to studying history and art history, which he achieved in 1851 with the academic degree of Dr. phil. completed.

Professionally, Schaefer was initially employed from 1849 to 1859 as tutor of Prince Karl von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen , who later became King Carol I of Romania. In 1869 he was appointed professor of art history at the TH Darmstadt , which he held until his retirement in 1902.

In 1863 Johann Georg Schaefer discovered the great series of Passions by Hans Holbein the Elder for the high altar of the Dominican Church in Frankfurt am Main , and in 1873 the Einhard basilica in Steinbach near Michelstadt in the Odenwald . Johann Georg Schaefer published, among other things, three volumes of the art monuments of the Grand Duchy of Hesse , published in 1878 ff.
