Johann Georg Walther
Johann Georg Walther (born April 3, 1708 in Oberörtmannsdorf ; † October 15, 1761 in Wittenberg ) was a German educator and rhetorician.
Life
Walther, who enjoyed his preparatory training at the grammar school in Zittau , had studied at the University of Leipzig since June 28, 1729 , where he obtained a baccalaureate on December 30, 1730 and a master's degree on February 8, 1731 . On November 9, 1742 he took up the post of rector of the school in Torgau . In 1744 he became a grammar school professor of history and Latin eloquence at the grammar school in Weißenfels and also its rector. At that time he emerged literarily with his six programs on the origin of sovereign power.
Recommended for university operations, Walther became an adjunct at the philosophical faculty of the University of Wittenberg on June 21, 1748 , and took on an extraordinary professorship for natural and international law there on August 26, 1748. In his lectures he dealt with the history of philosophy and the church, as well as rhetoric. After he had been given the full professorship of ethics and politics by Martin Hassen in 1750 , he expressed in vain the wish to swap the annoying chair for the professorship of rhetoric, his favorite subject. Unlike his predecessor Hassen, he also taught the history of philosophy, to which the statutes of the faculty expressly authorized the professor of morality and politics.
Otherwise he read about the three parts of moral philosophy, natural law, ethics and politics, but added "Oeconomica" . He gave a special lecture on the "Politica Externa" which the French called "l 'Art de negocier" . Gottfried Achenwall's compendium of statistics, which he had published in Göttingen in 1749 under the title "Outline of the latest political science of the most distinguished European empires and republics" , was also used by Walther for lectures in Wittenberg. Walther also took on organizational tasks at the university and in the summer semester of 1754 he managed the rectorate of the Wittenberg University .
