Jonkheer Johann George Otto Stuart von Schmidt on Altenstadt (born January 5, 1806 in Sint-Oedenrode , † August 7, 1857 in The Hague ) was a Dutch military and an executive in the Dutch East Indies and Suriname .

origin

His parents were the Dutch major general of the artillery Johann Heinrich Adolf von Schmidt auf Altenstadt (born April 26, 1754 - November 29, 1817) and his second wife Janet Balneavis (* March 4, 1775 - May 19, 1840) .

Career

Von Schmidt auf Altenstadt joined the military school in Semarang as a cadet in 1820 . Here he was promoted to 2nd lieutenant in 1823 and in this rank took part in the suppression of the Diponegoro (also: Dipo Negoro) uprising. In 1829 he became 1st lieutenant and in 1832 adjutant to Governor-General Johannes van den Bosch . In 1833 he went to Kebumen in Bagelen as acting assistant resident and in 1842 he became resident of Bagelen on Java .

Suriname

In 1850 he returned to the Netherlands due to illness. It was here that von Schmidt auf Altenstadt was appointed governor of Suriname in February 1852, where he took office on June 22nd. Under his leadership, coastal shipping was stimulated by lowering beacon , unloading and harbor fees. In addition, the public sale of plantation products in Paramaribo has been simplified by reducing bureaucratic obstacles. The postal system was reformed and postage reduced. Furthermore, the slave ordinance was changed during his tenure , the transfer of slaves from abandoned plantations to other places was only permitted with the threat of punishment after the governor's prior consent. The payment of premiums for the importation of slaves from the West Indies has been abolished. In addition, von Schmidt auf Altenstadt was involved as protector of the Afro-Surinamer Adolf Frederik Gravenberch in the dispute over his approval as a doctor in Paramaribo.

Immigrants

During his tenure, the first immigrants from Madeira and Chinese from Java arrived . August Kappler's failed attempt at colonization with Württemberg residents in Albina , on the Marowijne , also fell during this period .

After only three years as governor, von Schmidt auf Altenstadt received, at his own request, the honorable discharge from office. On August 25, 1855, he handed over the governorship to his successor.

Schmidt auf Altenstadt married Wilhelmina Jodoca van Laren on October 17, 1837 in Magelang (* February 24, 1819, † January 13, 1886). The couple had several children:
