Johann Gottfried Brendel (born February 23, 1712 in Wittenberg , † January 17, 1758 in Göttingen ) was a German physician .

Life

Born as the son of Wittenberg medical professor Adam Brendel and his wife Christina Henrietta von Berger, Johann Gottfried was baptized on February 27, 1712. Immediately one recognized in the boy a high perception, so that in 1724 he was sent to the Princely School in Grimma . Returning to Wittenberg, he began studying philosophy at the University of Leucorea .

On April 30, 1734, he earned his master's degree in philosophy and then completed a medical degree. On November 19, 1736 he received his doctorate and doctorate in medicine, completed his habilitation at the University of Göttingen , where he was appointed associate professor in 1738 and full professor in 1739. In 1755 he became the personal physician of Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hessen-Kassel .

His thorough mathematical education became crucial for his development as one of the great medical scholars of his time. As an iatrophysicist who tried to interpret biological and pathological phenomena in a purely physical manner, he dealt with forensic medicine studies, among other things. With studies on the Eustachian valve (on the ostium venae cavae inferioris in the right atrium ) and on the spiral leaf of the snail , he has made a name for himself in medical history. Even after his death, part of his work was published.
