Life

Johann Gottlob Erdmann Föhlisch was born in Lower Silesia . After his parents moved, he attended the Mallmitz village school from 1783 and continued his education at the scholarly school of the orphanage in Bunzlau in 1792 . At Easter 1798 he began studying theology at the University of Halle . To this end, he mainly attended the lectures by Georg Christian Knapp and August Hermann Niemeyer . He was particularly enthusiastic about the lectures by Friedrich August Wolf on philology, so that for the last two years he has mainly concentrated on philological, mathematical and philosophical lectures.

After his studies, Föhlisch found his first job at a higher boys 'and girls' school in Halle and was employed as a teacher at the royal pedagogy in Halle in 1802. On August 5, 1809, he took a position as vice-principal at the high school in Wertheim (today: Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Gymnasium Wertheim ), for which he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy on October 17, 1809 at the University of Wittenberg . In Wertheim he received the title of professor and in 1825, succeeding Johann Friedrich Neidhart , he was rector of the educational institution. In December 1827 he received the title of court counselor and in 1837 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Zähringen Order of the Lions . He retired on January 27, 1854.

Fölisch was married. The children are known from his marriage: Eduard Franz Ludwig Föhlisch (born August 12, 1816 in Wertheim; † March 31, 1880 ibid), grammar school director in Wertheim; Wilhelmine Föhlisch (born November 20, 1821 in Wertheim; † March 17, 1907 in Stuttgart), married on March 12, 1844 to pastor Gustav Hermann John (born April 23, 1809 in Neuenstadt am Kocher; † 1869); Alfred Föhlisch (born April 5, 1824 in Wertheim; † September 28, 1893 ibid), Domain Councilor in Bronnbach; Bertha Föhlisch (1828–1890), married 1849 in Wertheim to Carl Eberhard von Fischbach (born March 15, 1821 in Hohenheim; † November 23, 1901 in Sigmaringen).
