Johann Gradt

Johann Gradt (born December 21, 1831 in Jurklošter , Slovenia , † July 19, 1879 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect and preservationist .

Life

Gradt was born in what was then Lower Styria as the son of a butcher and later innkeeper. After completing his school education in Vienna, he studied technology at the Joanneum in Graz from 1851 to 1857 . He left Graz without a degree and switched to the architecture school of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After completing his studies, Gradt returned to Styria and from 1863 worked in the monument documentation service. In 1867 he received the official order from the Historisches Verein für Steiermark to complete the so-called monumental statistics begun by Carl Haas (drawing of primarily medieval monuments). In the summer of 1869 he became secretary of the Lower Austrian Trade Association and director of the first Austrian building trade school in Vienna. He then moved back to Vienna. In 1871 he became the correspondent for Lower Austria of the kk Central Commission for the research and preservation of architectural monuments .
