Johann Heinrich Kalthoff

Johann Heinrich Kalthoff (born February 5, 1803 in Warendorf , † January 11, 1839 in Münster ) was a German Hebrew , educator and university teacher .

Life

Kalthoff first attended the Laurentianum grammar school in Warendorf and then the Paulinum grammar school in Münster. In 1821 he moved to the University of Münster , where he studied theology and philology until 1824 . This was followed by a degree in Oriental Studies at the University of Bonn . In 1829 he received his doctorate there with the dissertation Jus matrimonii Indorum cum eodem Hebraeorum jure subinde comparatum . He went to Paris for further studies with Sylvester de Sacy and Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat . From there he returned to Münster. There he completed his habilitation in the fall of 1830 at the Philosophical Faculty.

In the following years Kalthoff taught oriental languages ​​and oriental antiquity as a private lecturer . He also took up a position as a teacher of the French language at the grammar school he had previously attended, which he also taught at the university. He is said to have enjoyed great popularity as a lecturer and teacher and died surprisingly in office. He left behind his wife and a son.
