Johann Heinrich Volkmann (theologian)

Johann Heinrich Volkmann (born October 9, 1804 in Bremen , †  March 28, 1865 in Bremen) was a Bremen theologian and teacher at the Bremen School of Academics for 38 years .

biography

Volkmann was the fourth son of the brandy distiller Johann Hermann Volkmann (1769–1824) and his wife Anna Magdalena Elisabeth, born at the end of the 18th century, who immigrated from Bergkirchen near Minden . Behrens (1777-1846). His younger brother Daniel Georg Volkmann (1812-1892) was a private banker in Bremen and a member of the Bremen citizenship .

After attending the Bremen School of Academics, Volkmann attended the University of Heidelberg and the University of Göttingen from 1824 . He passed his theological exam in 1827 and started teaching German, Latin, Greek and Hebrew in the service of the Bremen Latin and Academic School, which was called the Altes Gymnasium (Bremen) since 1857 .

From 1854 to 1865 Volkmann was a member of the Bremen citizenship as a representative of the 1st class (academics). He worked since 1858 in the commission for the election of new teachers and was particularly concerned with the development of schools in Bremen.

family

In 1837 he married Amalie Meier (1813–1842), the eldest of nine children of Bremen Mayor Diederich Meier and his wife Anna Gebekka, née. v. Gröning (1786–1860), daughter of the Bremen mayor Georg Gröning .

While Volkmann now had ties to the councilors and large trading families through the families of his in-laws, these ties were reinforced by the weddings of his wife's siblings. Two sisters married in the Kulenkampff families, a brother and a sister in the Lahusen family, a sister a Stoevesandt and a brother a von Post.

His four sons were the rector of Schulpforta , Diederich Volkmann (1838–1903), the merchant and American consul in Odessa Johann Hermann Volkmann (1840–1896), the partner and chairman of the supervisory board of the North German wool combing & worsted spinning mill ( north wool ) in Delmenhorst Johann Heinrich Volkmann (Kaufmann) (1842–1916) and the Bremen pastor Gustav Volkmann (1842–1917).
