The altar wall with the Rococo ornaments of the galleries and boxes in the Uetersen monastery church

Johann Herbst was probably born in Uetersen in 1691 and learned rocailles and shadow painting . He also worked as a portrait painter among others in the Hanseatic Society of Hamburg. His most famous works in the Hamburg area include the painting, decoration and gilding with gold leaf of the altar wall and the balustrade as well as the rococo ornaments of the gallery parapets and the boxes of the Uetersen monastery church. This altar was created by the Hamburg sculptor Johann Georg Engert and the design comes from the master builder Otto Johann Müller. Other works that can be seen from afar are the decorations and gilding of the spiers and the outer cross of the monastery church.

Another, not reliably proven work is in the Eiswirth'sches Haus in Uetersen.
