Johann Hilten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Hilten , also Johannes Herwich (* around 1425 in Ilten ; † around 1500/1502 in Eisenach ) was a German Franciscan .

Life

Johannes Hilten studied theology and philosophy at the University of Erfurt from 1444 to 1447 and then entered the Franciscan Convent in Magdeburg , which belonged to the Saxon Franciscan Province ( Saxonia ). In 1463 he was sent to Riga in Livonia and, after being sent to Dorpat in 1473, he came into conflict with the superiors of the order. In 1477 he was tried for spreading heresies , and Hilten was sent to the convents in Weimar and Eisenach and imprisoned in the monastery. Around 1500 or 1502 he died in Eisenach, probably of starvation.

Act

Johann Hilten was a critic of Christianity of his time, which he viewed as secular. Around 1485 he wrote a commentary on Daniel , to which Melanchthon referred, among others . Because of his prophecy that in 1516 "another man, an opponent of monasticism" would come to reform the church, he was included by Melanchthon in his directory of the prophets of the Reformation . There is no evidence that Martin Luther knew Johann Hilten personally. In fact, Hilten came into conflict with the superiors because of his eschatological predictions; He predicted the subjugation of Germany by the Turks in 1600 and the end of the world in 1651.
