from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann I (* 1309 ; † September 20, 1371 in Weilburg ) was Count of Nassau and from 1355 to 1371 Count of Nassau-Weilburg , since 1366 count prince . He founded the older Nassau-Weilburg line.

Life

Johann was the second eldest son of Count Gerlach I of Nassau from the Walram branch and Agnes of Hesse, a daughter of Heinrich the Younger, a son of Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse . As early as 1344, while his father was still alive, he came to power together with his older brother Adolf . The brothers shared their property in 1355, whereby Johann Weilburg , Neuweilnau , Freienfels , Graefenhausen and the Nassau part received from Cleeberg . Johann became the founder of the Nassau-Weilburg line.

Johann, grandson of King Adolf von Nassau († 1298), was given the rank of Prince Count of the Empire by Emperor Charles IV in 1366, at the same time for his descendants .

Through his first marriage to Gertrud von Merenberg , he acquired Merenberg and Gleiberg . The second marriage with Johanna von Saarbrücken was the basis for the inheritance of the County of Saarbrücken in 1381 . After his death in 1371 he was succeeded by his son Philipp as Count of Nassau-Weilburg.

On May 16, 1354 he was appointed by his brother Gerlach von Nassau to the supreme bailiff or bailiff or caretaker for Hesse, Thuringia and on the Eichsfelde for Kurmainz . He held the office until November 18, 1356 and again from October 6, 1367 until his death.

Marriages and offspring

Johann was married twice. In 1333 he married Gertrud († October 6, 1350), the heir to Hartrad VI. from Merenberg and Gleiberg.

In his second marriage in 1353 he married Johanna, the heir to Count Johann II of Saarbrücken . With her he had seven children:
