John II of Châtillon (French: Jean II. De Châtillon ; * around 1345 ; † 1381 in Valenciennes ) was a Count of Blois and Dunois , Lord of Avesnes , and of Schoonhoven and Gouda from the House of Châtillon . By marrying Mechtild von Geldern in 1372 he became a candidate for the title of Duke of Geldern.

Life

He was a son of Count Louis I of Blois († 1346) and Jeanne d'Avesnes († 1350), Countess of Soissons and Mistress of Chimay , a daughter of Jean d'Avesnes, Lord of Beaumont, from the House of Avesnes .

In 1356 he inherited the extensive estates of his grandfather, Johann von Beaumont, in Holland and Zeeland. In the county of Holland , these formed a state within a state. He took a position of trust at the court of Albrecht of Bavaria , the Count of Holland, who entrusted him with the administration of Holland and Zealand in 1359/60 and 1363/64. There he expanded his farm in Schoonhoven into a first-class cultural center. He also took part in two trips to Prussia in 1363 and 1369 .

In 1372 he married Mechtild von Geldern , the daughter of Reinald II von Geldern, and became involved in the Geldrian succession dispute. The marriage remained childless. In the year of his wedding, Johann followed his older brother Ludwig as Count of Blois and Count of Dunois . After his death in 1381, his brother Guido II inherited the rulers.
