Johann Jaenichen (born October 8, 1873 in Großenhain ; † May 7, 1945 in Wustrow ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Jaenichen was born in Grossenhain in 1873 as the son of a major. He taught himself sculpture as an autodidact after initially completing a civil service career as a financial assessor at the Royal Saxon State Railways . On the occasion of a study trip that took him to Rome , he met Hedwig Woermann , whom he married in 1908. With her he moved to Sceaux , France , where he specialized in the representation of horses and riders. His first exhibitions with 19 sculptures took place in E. Arnold's art salon in Dresden and in the Hamburger Kunstverein . During the First World War both moved to Dresden; In 1919 they bought a house in Wustrow. Here they both set up a studio, which Jaenichen used for sculpture and his wife for painting. He also used the old fish smokehouse in the Barnstorf district of Wustrow as a studio, where Heinrich Hauser also lived in 1925 .

Her work was interrupted by trips overseas for several years in some cases until she finally returned to Germany in 1936. Jaenichen's horse depictions continued to be popular with sports and art lovers during the National Socialist era . However, both of them found it difficult to cope with the changed climate.

Shortly after the Soviet troops marched in on May 3rd, the couple attempted suicide on May 7th, 1945, which Hedwig Jaenichen-Woermann survived. Jaenichen's works in his studio were destroyed. His grave is in the Wustrower Friedhof.
