Johann Jakob Frei

Johann Jakob Frei (born August 9, 1789 in Degersheim , † April 16, 1852 in Trogen ; resident in Hemberg , from 1807 in Herisau ) was a Swiss pastor from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johann Jakob Frei was a son of Johann Jakob Frey, pastor, and Anna Elisabeth Steiger. In 1807 he married Johanna Schefer, daughter of Johann Hermann Schefer, state ensign.

From 1806 to 1807 he studied theology at the University of Basel . From 1807 to 1824 he worked as a pastor in Schönengrund and from 1824 to 1852 in Trogen. From 1825 to 1852 he served as marriage judge. From 1830 to 1852 he held the office of dean of the Ausserrhoder state church . From 1847 to 1852 he was a member of the theological examination college . He was an important employee of the Appenzeller Zeitung in the early years. In 1833 he worked as their interim editor . From 1833 to 1847 he was editor of the Appenzell monthly newspaper . Under his leadership, it mainly published historical works and chronic reviews.

Frei was heavily involved in education and the poor as well as in non-profit organizations . From 1824 to 1852 he was a member of the state school commission. From 1825 to 1852 he was on the supervisory commission of the canton school , from 1839 as its president. From 1813 he was a member of the Swiss Charitable Society ; In 1823 and 1835 he was Vice President. In 1819 he was a founding member of the Sankt-Gallisch-Appenzell non-profit society. From 1835 to 1839 he served as its president and from 1844 to 1852 as its vice-president. He was an active speaker and the real link between St. Gall and Appenzell. In 1823 he was a co-founder of the Appenzell Patriotic Society. Various presentations, speeches and essays by Frei have appeared in print.
