The Cantonal Library of Appenzell Ausserrhoden is the central collection and archive point for Appenzell-Extra-Rhodian media. It has the legal mandate of the most complete possible documentation and archiving of published and unpublished Ausserrhoder information carriers (Appenzellensia). These are in particular those that have appeared in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden , were written by people who are resident in the canton, or have the canton or its residents on the subject. The canton library also houses collections and bequests on Appenzell culture and history. It accepts documents from private individuals and from other libraries or institutions and guarantees long-term storage in a safe place.

The canton library of Appenzell Ausserrhoden is located at Landsgemeindeplatz 7 (pentagonal palace) and 1 (parish hall) in the center of Trogen .

history

The library was founded in 1896 and is based on a donation agreement from the municipality of Trogen to the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden on 16/20. August 1896.

Emergence

In its founding year, the canton library was able to take over a collection of books and manuscripts with 15,000–20,000 titles from the Trogen municipal library. This inventory had been created since the 1820s in the circle of the Appenzell-Patriotic and later the Appenzell non-profit society. By the middle of the 19th century, the library was expanded from the collections of Johann Conrad Honnerlag (1777–1838) , Johann Caspar Zellweger-Gessner (1768–1855) and Johann Jakob Frei (1789–1852) . In the transfer agreement to the canton it was stated that, should the cantonal library be relocated to another municipality, the books from the estate of Johann Jakob Frei and Johann Caspar Zellweger-Gessner would have to remain in Trogen. The first canton's librarian, Karl Ritter (1856–1899), died in office. He was succeeded by August Blatter (1875–1954), who introduced the card catalog during his short term in office until 1903.

20th century

Cantonal librarian Adam Marti (1857–1940) compiled a complete inventory for the first time. At the beginning of the 20th century, the library owned around 26,000 volumes and brochures, 300 volumes of manuscripts, 38 folders with maps and engravings, and 65 bundles of newspapers. Marti made a name for himself as an informant about the history of the country and Appenzell topics and personalities. In 1928 Albert Nägeli (1880–1958) became head of the cantonal library. His focus was on sifting through, organizing and cataloging the extensive collections of letters from Laurenz Zellweger , Johann Caspar Zellweger-Gessner and Johann Jakob Frei. During his tenure, the estate of weaver pastor Howard Eugster-Züst (1861–1932) was donated to the canton library; In 1972 further parts of this estate were added, in 2004 and 2007 the last private documents and pictures.

In 1953 the government council elected the first local cantonal librarian: Walter Schläpfer (1914–1991). During his tenure, Schläpfer wrote several standard works on the national, economic and press history of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. In the mid-1950s, the registration of around 25,000 items in the library in the card catalog was completed. The canton library realigned itself as a purely scientific library . In 1957 it came into the possession of the extensive book collection of the President of the Supreme Court and founder and President of Säntis-Schwebebahn AG , Carl Meyer (1873–1947) . After a major renovation in the main building of the canton library, the Trogen parish and parish house, which took place from 1975 to 1977, the former ballroom of the house was opened as an exhibition room on the third floor. In 1980 an exhibition was held there on the occasion of the 250th birthday of Salomon Gessner , friend of Laurenz Zellweger and father-in-law of Johann Caspar Zellweger-Gessner.

In 1986 Johannes Matthias Schläpfer-Wochner (* 1955) took over the management of the library. His term of office was characterized by the limited space available for years and renewed relocation of holdings. After the canton had acquired the Pentagon Palace, the former residential and commercial building of Dorothea and Johann Caspar Zellweger-Gessner, in 1991, the budget item for the provision of various rooms for the reception, the reading room, an office and the warehouse of the cantonal library on the ground floor was added in 1996 of the palace approved.

The move to the new premises took place in 1998. This year, canton librarian Matthias Weishaupt (* 1961) took up his post. For the first time he was able to create percentage jobs for a librarian and in 1999 for a research assistant. The focus of his tenure was on the EDP indexing of all books and brochures and the development of an electronic image database. The decision to join the St. Gallen library network SGBN, a catalog network, was made in 2000.

With various events on the Description de l'Égypte , the 25 text volumes and 900 large-format lithographs of the second edition of this monumental work published from 1821 to 1829, which was created following Napoleon's Egypt campaign and acquired by Johann Conrad Honnerlag (1777–1838) and immediately as « a Cheval de bataille for possible visits »had been given to the Trogen municipal library at the time, Weishaupt made one of the important special collections known to the public. Furthermore, under him the Carl Meyer collection was opened up with the publication of a catalog, the financing of the restoration of important portraits from the estate materials of the Zellweger and Honnerlag families and the initiation of the Trogen Library Talks, an interdisciplinary colloquium that took place in 2005, 2007 and 2009 and the handwritten ones Materials from the estate of the Zellweger family, especially Laurenz Zellweger, were on the subject.

21st century

Heidi Eisenhut (* 1976) has been running the library since October 2006. In 2020, the cantonal library will have 320 percent jobs, divided between five people. In addition, at least one person supports the team temporarily for a workload of 20 percent. The institution can also count on numerous voluntary employees, who are particularly involved in a project for the transcription of manuscripts and are on hand on cultural and historical tours in the village center of Trogen. The priorities in recent years have been the expansion of the collections of the canton library through the Collectio Magica et Occulta CMO (including valuable library and archive holdings from the previous holdings of Adalbert Schmid, E&E Geldmacher, Richard Butz, Kenneth Grant and Hanne Wildt), through the Steiger family archive, through the private archives of the musician, 1968 and freak Stefan Signer and the tattoo artist and life story collector Herbert Hoffmann as well as through the works bequests of the wood cutter Ruedi Peter, the graphic artist Ruedi Bannwart and Fred Bauer and the photographers Karl Wolf, Herbert Maeder and Paul Rüdlinger. In addition, the cantonal art collection was transferred to the collections of the canton library. It is gradually being expanded through new acquisitions under the direction of the Office for Culture Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Since 2011, the canton library's picture collection has been able to include 137 works by the Ausserrhode artist Hans Krüsi , the 800- plus works of the artist Gertrud Schwyzer, 350 drawings by Johann Ulrich Fitzi and 545 Artistamps stamp sheets by Mail-Art artist H. R. Fricker can be added.

A central focus of the development and communication work in the 21st century is publicizing the multifaceted holdings of the Zellweger family archive . The latest results of the work on this central collection are available in the “Century of the Zellweger” offer, which can be discovered in Trogen, as well as in the book published by Heidi Eisenhut in 2019 about the pentagonal palace in Trogen and the history of the Zellweger-Gessner family.

Special collections

One of the characteristics of the cantonal library is its collections.

Zellweger family estate

Within the family estate with life documents and chronical records, the letter bequests of Laurenz Zellweger (1692–1764), Johannes Zellweger-Hirzel (1730–1802) and Johann Caspar Zellweger-Gessner (1768–1855) deserve special mention. In cooperation with the State Archives (Zellweger's estate), the historical seminar of the University of Zurich and the Germanic institutes of the Universities of Bern and Bochum (3rd Trogen Library Discussion 2009), the cataloging and processing of the holdings was launched in 2008. The material offers a rich fund for science as well as for the general public interested in national, educational, social, economic and cultural history. An apartment in the Fünfeckpalast and its inventory has been part of the family archive since November 2013. Under the name Zellweger Apartment, it complements the ensemble of Zellweger palaces and the accessible stuccoed and painted rooms on the square with an interior that was continuously used from 1809 to 2013.

His aim was to comprehensively document the history of the development of the book and book illustration from medieval manuscript to the sophisticated printed work of the 20th century.
