Johann Knobloch (Linguist)

Johann Knobloch (born January 5, 1919 in Vienna ; † July 25, 2010 in Bonn ) was an Austrian linguist. He was a professor of general and comparative linguistics at various universities.

He spent his childhood in Znojmo . Knobloch studied at the University of Vienna . On December 1, 1939, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and took part in the French campaign. He was wounded and lost a leg. In 1943 Knobloch stayed for ten days in the " Gypsy detention camp Lackenbach " , brokered by the SS-Ahnenerbe , to research the language of the Roma detained there and was able to do his doctorate in 1944. In 1951 Knobloch completed his habilitation with the thesis "On the prehistory of the Indo-European verb". After four years as an assistant, he was offered a position at the University of Greifswald, which he accepted. Three semesters later, however, the recall came to Innsbruck as an associate professor. In December 1961 he was appointed full professor in Innsbruck. In April 1963 he accepted a call to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . There he held the chair for general and comparative linguistics from 1967 to 1984.

Knobloch was an honorary member of numerous scientific societies, a corresponding member of the Gypsy Lore Society in Liverpool and a board member and honorary member of the Society for German Language (GfdS); In 1983 he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria . He was also an honorary member of the Vienna Mother Tongue Association and wrote over 100 articles in its Wiener Sprachbl Blätter . Knobloch was married and had no children.
