Johann Lorenz Benzler

Johann Lorenz Benzler (born February 19, 1747 in Lemgo ; † April 3, 1817 in Wernigerode ) was a German librarian and writer .

Benzler was initially the Hessian postmaster in Lemgo. In the period from 1773 to 1783 Benzler was in charge of the Lippische intelligence papers . In addition, from 1780 he was library collaborator , 1783 librarian and from 1794 Count Christian Friedrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode's councilor in Wernigerode . As a writer, he was friends with Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim in Halberstadt .

In 1807 he was godfather to Count Wilhelm zu Stolberg-Wernigerode at Wernigerode Castle .

In 1775 he married Marie Sophie Charlotte b. Stock (1759-1789). The children of this marriage were Sophie Elisabeth Charlotte (1776–1777), Johann Wilhelm August (1778–1831), Sophie Elisabeth Dorothee Juliane (1780–1785), Justus Lorenz (1782–1849) and Friedrich Henrich Leopold (1787–1790) emerged.

In 1790 Benzler married Elisabeth Henriette geb. Jung (1763–1794), with whom he had the daughter Auguste Küster (1791–1875).

Benzler married a third time in 1795 Wilhelmine Josepha Petronella, b. Schadler or Scheid (e) ler. This gave birth to his son Friedrich Leopold (1800–1803).

Benzler died of a breast disease in 1817 and was buried on April 6th in the Theobaldifriedhof in Nöschenrode .
