Johann Ludwig Engel (born April 18, 1699 in Grabow , † February 8, 1758 in Rostock ) was a German university professor.

Life

Johann Ludwig Engel was a son of the Grabower pastor Stephan Engel (1664–1710) and his wife Juliane Margarethe, born. Suckow (1673-1734). After attending the Grabow City School, the Schwerin Cathedral School and the Lüneburg Johannis School, he began studying theology at the University of Rostock in May 1718 .

During a substitution of his brother-in-law, Zacharias Becker, who was a pastor in Grabow, brother of the Rostock mathematician and theologian Peter Becker , health problems arose which prompted him to give up the ministry. From 1734 to 1736 he went to Wittenberg and Halle for further academic training. In Wittenberg he was awarded a Magister lib. art. PhD. In 1736 he was appointed ducal full professor of logic at the Philosophical Faculty in Rostock by Duke Karl Leopold (Mecklenburg) . This professorship had previously remained vacant for 15 years after Franz Albert Aepinus' change in 1721. Between 1737 and 1755 Engel was Dean of the Faculty seven times, Rector in 1738, Procancellor three times between 1746 and 1748 and also librarian of the Academic Library from 1737 to 1742.

Johann Ludwig Engel died unmarried in 1758. Wenceslaus Johann Gustav Karsten received his professorship . A nephew of Engels was the writer, theater director and philosopher Johann Jakob Engel (1741–1802).
