Johann Martin Steiger

Johann Martin Steiger (born March 10, 1829 in Herisau ; † December 20, 1899 in Bern ; resident in Herisau) was a Swiss politician from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johann Martin Steiger was the son of Hans Jakob Stricker, fountain master , and Anna Zellweger. In 1859 he married Anna Zölper, daughter of Johann Jakob Zölper, owner of the finish , councilor and community clerk . Despite his penchant for painting , he completed a commercial training in Herisau. He worked as a businessman in Belgium and the USA for ten years . In 1861 he founded the then largest embroidery factory in Herisau. In 1886 it went bankrupt . From 1863 to 1875 he was a councilor. From 1870 to 1875 he was a member of the Ausserrhoder Grand Council . From 1875 to 1881 he held the office of regional master of the cap and government councilor. From 1881 to 1882 he was a cantonal councilor . In 1869 he was co-founder and until 1883 Vice President and Treasurer of the Säntis section of the Swiss Alpine Club . From 1876 to 1881 he was the first President of the Cantonal Bank . Between 1887 and 1891 he wrote a propaganda book about the Swiss Alpine roads on behalf of the postal administration. From 1892 to 1899 he worked as a coal trader in Bern. He was a talented landscape painter .
