Johann Michael Hartung (around 1750)

Johann Michael Hartung (born February 3, 1708 in Dürkheim ; † January 13, 1763 there ) was a German master organ builder . An organ builder of the same name (* 1702 and † 1777 in Schloßvippach) worked as an organ builder in Schloßvippach .

life and work

Johann Michael Hartung was born as the eldest son of the organ builder Augustinus Hartung (1677–1739) and Sophia born. Schwab was born. He learned the trade of organ building in his father's workshop.

His independent activity was first mentioned in 1733 when he repaired the organ in Dalsheim and in the same year checked that in Albisheim for its functionality. In the organ building contract for the municipality of Ellerstadt (April 26, 1737) he was named as an employee of his father. In 1746 he built an organ in Winden and on March 3, 1749 a contract was signed with the community of Gimmeldingen for the construction of an organ there. On June 24, 1751, the Enkenbach organ that he had built was inaugurated. On December 4, 1751, the contract with the municipality of Haßloch for a new organ followed. 1752 the contract for Rohrbach bei Landau and the tuning of the organ in Gimmeldingen. Hartung also built the organ in the Protestant church in Haßloch in 1752. In 1753 he repaired the organ in the Simultankirche in Bechtheim near Worms and on June 13, 1754 the contract with the Reformed community in Edenkoben followed . The Oberotterbach organ was completed at the end of 1754 . The last known order from Hartung concerns the construction of the organ at Assenheim in 1759.

It is believed that the organs in Kirchheim an der Weinstrasse , in the Protestant church in Dammheim (1749), in the Protestant church in Großkarlbach (around 1750) and in the Catholic church in Hagenbach (1752) also came from the Hartung workshop.

His first marriage was Anna Barbara Klein on May 21, 1737. With her he had four children - three daughters and finally a son. On July 28, 1746, his wife died of a miscarriage about a month earlier. Hartung married again on May 16, 1747 with Maria Louise Baum. From this marriage another nine children emerged, including Johann Philipp Hartung (born July 9, 1750 in Dürkheim; † January 3, 1806 in Kallstadt), who was the last organ builder of the Hartung family.

Hartung died on January 13, 1763 at the age of 54 as a judge and councilor of Dürkheim an der Haardt . The former Count and later Prince Carl Friedrich Wilhelm von Leiningen-Hartenburg himself described him as one of the most outstanding men and artists of his rule. Hartung maintained numerous friendly contacts with musicians from the Leininger court and was portrayed around 1750 by an unknown artist, perhaps a Leininger court painter. This painting is still owned by the family today and shows the sitter behind a table with tools and small organ pipes.
