Johann Michaelis (Pedagogue)

Johann Michaelis (born November 9, 1813 in Sibiu , Austrian Empire ; † June 27, 1877 in Alzen , Austria-Hungary ) was a Transylvanian Lutheran clergyman and educator .

Life

Michaelis was the son of a surgeon . From 1832 to 1835 he studied at the Evangelical Theological College in Vienna . After his return to Sibiu in 1835 he founded a higher education institution for female youth regardless of creed . This existed until 1849. In 1838 he became a teacher at the Hermannstadter Gymnasium and in the following years he worked as a writer. In 1849 he became city ​​preacher and in 1853 director of the evangelical girls' school in Sibiu. He also held the office of music director of the Sibiu Music Society from 1855 to 1858 .

Michaelis was elected pastor of Alzen on April 8, 1861 . He worked there until his death, including residents of other nationalities and denominations in his work.

Michaelis was the founder and from 1844 to 1849 co-editor of the weekly newspaper Der Siebenbürgische Volksfreund and in 1851 and 1852 co-editor of the school and church newspaper for the evangelical co-religionists of Transylvania .
